Camphone video posted on YouTube that went viral on social media regarding the traffic altercation along EDSA
MANILA, Philippines — Both the knife-wielding taxi driver and the gun owner who figured in a recent traffic altercation caught on video may be held liable for the incident according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Police Chief Virgilio Lazo, head of the PNP firearms and explosive office, said that they “are now monitoring the investigation of the incident.”
“As soon as we ascertain their identities, we will check if he has a license for the firearm and if he has, we will move it to be revoked,” Lazo said in a phone interview.
Unwarranted, unreasonable force
In the video, a man pulled out a gun and pointed it a taxi driver who was beforehand apparently trying to brandish a bladed weapon against him in the middle of an altercation along EDSA.
Lazo dismissed presumptions floated online that the gun owner may just be possibly trying to defend himself.
“Wrong. That is unreasonable force. That is unwarranted,” Lazo said. “In the first place, puwede naman siyang tumakbo (he could have just ran away).”
In addition, the taxi driver may also be held responsible.
“As far as I am concerned, mayroon,” Lazo said when asked if the taxi driver could also have liability.
Lazo said that they will be coordinating the local police who will be in charge of investigating the incident.
“What is important is to know first who are these people,” Lazo said.
Winston Ginez, chair of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, as of press time has not been answering queries on whether they are also investigating the incident.
