Tau Gamma Phi has own probe of Servando death
The Tau Gamma Phi is investigating the alleged hazing that killed 18-year-old Guillo Cesar Servando over the weekend, a report on GMA News TV's “Quick Response Team” said on Tuesday.
Fraternity spokesperson Lorenzo Lapak said the group was "conducting it own internal investigation" into the initiation rites that allegedly killed the De La Salle- College of St. Benilde student.
Members of the fraternity are suspected to be behind the fatal hazing of De La Salle-College of St. Benilde student Guillo Cesar Servando.
"We are not confirming that the Tau Gamma Phi is involved in this senseless hazing.... We are not confirming that the involved were all fraternity brothers because, as of now, the investigation is on going," Lapak said.
"[We] will actively and fully cooperate with investigating authorities to bring those involved to justice as as fraternity founded on principles and rationality and non-violence," he said.
Lapak said the organization was "troubled" by news reports linking members of the fraternity to Servando's death. He did acknowledge that possibility that some chapters weren't following the fraternity policy against violent initiations.
"It regrets that some of its chapters may not have abided by the fraternity's no-hazing policy. Thus, resulted to the unfortunate incident," Lapak said.
One of suspects in the fatal hazing incident has surrendered to the police on Tuesday. The suspect was reportedly a member of Tau Gamma Phi.
Lapak said that the fraternity has long stopped the practice of hazing during its initiation rites.
"The Tau Gamma Phi strongly condemns the violence inflicted against Guillo Cesar Servando. The fraternity does not and will not condone this kind of incident," Lapak said.
"The fraternity enjoins its councils and chapters to strictly abide by the Anti-Hazing Law to ensure that no harm or physical violence is inflicted to applicant-members of the fraternity," he added.
